When Neslihan Ergin was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2020, she never imagined that the hospital where she received treatment would one day become her workplace and her new purpose.
Navigating the challenges of surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy during the height of COVID-19 while facing job loss, Neslihan found strength and support at Acibadem Kent Hospital in İzmir.
Today, she has returned to the very oncology department that helped her heal, as a valued team member. Drawing from her own cancer journey, she uplifts and connects with patients, offering not just care but hope born of lived experience.
“When patients see someone like me - still standing, working, and smiling, it gives them hope. Early diagnosis saved my life, and my role here allows me to encourage others to seek timely care and remain hopeful. Last Wednesday I completed my radiotherapy and am now back to enjoying folk dancing regularly,” says Neslihan.
Neslihan is the definition of compassionate care. She regularly checks in on patients receiving chemotherapy, offering reassurance not just to them, but also to their families. Aybike Tonguç, who is receiving chemotherapy at Acibadem Kent Hospital, shared, “Hearing from someone who truly lived through it - not just a doctor or nurse - made all the difference.”
Medical Oncology Specialist Assoc. Prof Gürbüz Gürümlü, who treated Neslihan, affirms the impact she has on others, saying, “Her story and presence boosts patient morale, supports treatment adherence, and provides unique comfort through genuine empathy.”
Neslihan’s story highlights Acibadem’s commitment to holistic, patient-centred care, reminding us that healing is strengthened by empathy, timely intervention, and comprehensive support.
