Recovery from surgery often begins long before a patient enters the operating theatre. At IHH’s Gleneagles Hospital Johor, a multidisciplinary team has been reshaping that recovery journey through a more coordinated and patient-centred approach to knee replacement care.

Their efforts have led to the hospital becoming the first in Malaysia to achieve ERAS® Qualification in Knee Arthroplasty, marking a significant milestone in advancing surgical recovery standards in the country.
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is an evidence-based care model designed to support patients before, during and after surgery. Rather than focusing solely on the procedure itself, the approach looks at the entire recovery journey — from pre-surgery preparation and nutritional support to pain management and earlier mobilisation where appropriate.
For patients undergoing knee replacement surgery, this can translate into clearer preparation, improved post-surgical comfort, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and a smoother return to daily life.
Behind the achievement is a cross-functional team brought together by a shared goal: improving recovery outcomes while maintaining high standards of care.
The initiative began as a practical response to a healthcare challenge — how to better support patient recovery while managing hospital bed capacity safely and efficiently. What followed was a collaborative effort involving surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians and hospital leaders working together to redesign the patient experience around recovery.
The recognition reflects more than a certification milestone. It highlights how coordinated, incremental improvements across teams can create a safer, more predictable and more confident recovery journey for patients.
As healthcare systems continue evolving to meet growing patient needs, the achievement by IHH’s Gleneagles Hospital Johor demonstrates how innovation in care delivery can come through collaboration, consistency and a commitment to putting recovery at the centre of treatment.
