A multidisciplinary team at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur has successfully performed a combined surgery to repair both the airway and heart of a one-year-old child, addressing two life-threatening conditions in a single operation.

Born with severe airway narrowing and congenital heart disease, the child experienced persistent breathing and feeding difficulties and weighed just 6kg at one year old. As the condition progressed, surgical intervention became necessary.
Rather than conducting separate procedures, the clinical team carried out a carefully coordinated operation to repair the trachea and correct the heart defect during the same surgical session. The approach reduced the need for multiple anaesthetic exposures and enabled a more streamlined recovery process.
The complex procedure required close collaboration among paediatric surgeons, cardiac specialists, anaesthetists, intensivists, nursing teams and operating theatre staff. Detailed planning and coordination were essential to ensure both conditions were addressed safely and effectively.
Post-operative assessments indicated a stable airway. Following monitoring and recovery in intensive care, the child was discharged and continues to receive follow-up care.
The case highlights the integrated, multidisciplinary capabilities available across IHH Healthcare Malaysia, where specialised teams work collaboratively to manage complex conditions and deliver coordinated patient care.
