Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) has achieved a historic milestone in gastrointestinal care, successfully performing Malaysia's first 360-degree circumferential Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) for early-stage oesophageal cancer.

This landmark procedure underscores the hospital's commitment to advancing world-class care and improving patient outcomes.
The journey began with an incidental finding during a routine upper GI endoscopy by Dato' Dr Mahendra Raj, Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, who identified an early-stage squamous cell carcinoma. The patient was promptly referred to Dr Gew Lai Teck, Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist with specialised training in ESD. Following meticulous discussion, planning, and optimisation, the complex procedure was successfully performed by Dr Gew together with Dr Lau Peng Choong, Consultant Upper GIT Surgeon.
This innovative technique demonstrates the power of ESD in treating early-stage oesophageal and gastric cancers while preserving organ function—offering patients a curative option that avoids major surgery. The achievement reflects the continued evolution of advanced endoscopic capabilities at PHKL, driven by clinical expertise, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a patient-centric approach.
This milestone also highlights the critical importance of early detection. Patients experiencing new or persistent digestive symptoms are encouraged to consult a doctor promptly, as timely evaluation can make all the difference.
