Our team helped an underweight 14-month-old child with a rare swallowing disorder restore the ability to eat and gain weight normally through the minimally invasive procedure.

Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai has achieved a significant milestone in paediatric care by successfully performing India’s youngest Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) on a 14-month-old child.
Weighing just 5.9 kg, the infant was suffering from Achalasia Cardia, a rare condition that caused persistent vomiting, recurrent pneumonia, and severe malnutrition. Using an adapted paediatric approach, the multidisciplinary team performed the minimally invasive procedure entirely through the food pipe, without any external incisions.
The procedure released the tightened valve, restoring normal swallowing and enabling the child to eat, gain weight, and breathe more comfortably. The successful outcome highlights the importance of early diagnosis, precise anaesthesia, and advanced endoscopic expertise in treating complex, high-risk paediatric cases.
This milestone reflects Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai’s commitment to delivering world-class, minimally invasive solutions, and renewed hope to families facing rare and challenging conditions.
