Leader in Heart and Lung Transplants

Gleneagles Global Hospitals marked its completion of 169 heart and lung transplants – the most in India by far – on 25 July 2019.

Launched two years ago, its flagship Heart and Lung Transplant Programme is the only comprehensive solid thoracic organ programme in India, and has a positive post-transplant survival rates of 85%.

The programme’s high success rate was acknowledged by the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, placing Gleneagles Global Hospitals on par with some of the best heart and lung centres in the world.

A strong advocate of organ donation, Gleneagles Global Hospitals plays an active role in raising public awareness of organ donation in India, where organ donation rates are among the lowest in the world.

“With more than 50,000 people waiting for a heart transplant every year and more than 20,000 annually for a lung transplant, there is a wide gap between the number of transplants needed and the organs available,” says Dr Sandeep Attawar, Director and Chair of the Heart and Lung Transplant programme.

With rapid advances in medical technology, improved diagnosis and timely intervention, more transplant recipients are living longer than before. At Gleneagles Global Hospitals, the transplant care team focuses on stabilising patients as they await transplantation and provide medical options for those who are not suitable for organ transplantation.
