Where Help Is At Hand
22 Dec 2021

After its first successful bilateral hand transplant in August last year, the team at Global Hospital, Parel, Mumbai has gone on to perform the life-changing surgery on two quadruple amputee patients – a first for India.

A bilateral hand transplant surgery is a rare and complex procedure that involves connecting the main arteries, bones, multiple veins, nerves, muscles and tendons. Our team led by Dr Nilesh Satbhai, Head of Plastic, Reconstructive Surgery and Micro Surgery, worked tirelessly to prepare the hands of both recipients and donors, before joining them accurately and precisely to 22-year-old Jagdev Singh (pictured right), an aspiring Kabaddi player from Rajasthan, and 33-year-old Prakash Shelar (pictured left), an Accountant from Pune.

Global Hospital, Parel was also the first private hospital in India to perform a successful bilateral hand transplant in August 2020 on 24-year-old Monica More (pictured centre) who lost her hands in a train accident in 2014.

Good job to the team at Global Hospital!
