Parkway Shanghai Hospital and Shanghai General Hospital Establish Strategic Partnership to Advance High-Quality Healthcare
25 Nov 2025
Parkway Shanghai Hospital and Shanghai General Hospital have formalised a strategic cooperation agreement to jointly develop innovative models of integrated healthcare that unite international expertise with local strengths.

The agreement was signed on 17 November 2025 and supports Shanghai’s goal of becoming a leading medical hub in Asia and a preferred destination for global medical tourism.

The signing ceremony was led by Dr Hu Guoyong, Vice President of Shanghai General Hospital, and Dr Wan Lijun, General Manager of Parkway Shanghai Hospital. It was witnessed by Mr Chen Jing, President of the Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Professor Zheng Xingdong, President of Shanghai General Hospital, Dr Prem Kumar Nair, Group Chief Executive Officer of IHH Healthcare, Dr Kenneth Tsang, Regional Chief Executive Officer of IHH Healthcare North Asia, as well as government leaders and partners.

Growing public awareness of health and rising expectations among Shanghai residents have increased demand for premium medical services. The partnership aligns with the Healthy Shanghai 2030 Plan, which calls for optimising a diversified healthcare system and strengthening coordination between public and private providers.

Under the agreement, both institutions will deepen cooperation in three key areas: academic exchange, clinical services, and hospital management. Academic collaboration will focus on joint international discipline-building, talent exchange, and research innovation in key specialties. Clinical cooperation will strengthen two-way referral channels, enhance specialist collaboration, and enable shared resources that improve diagnostic efficiency, treatment outcomes, and patient experience. Collaboration in management will advance medical alliance development and introduce global best practices to elevate hospital operations and service standards.

Mr Chen Jing highlighted the development of the New Hongqiao International Medical Centre and noted that strong support from municipal and district authorities has enabled meaningful partnerships between Chinese and international institutions, as well as between public and private organisations. He expressed confidence that the collaboration between Parkway Shanghai Hospital and Shanghai General Hospital will set a new milestone for two-way opening-up, attract high-quality international medical resources, and strengthen Shanghai’s position as an international medical centre.

As part of IHH Healthcare, Parkway Shanghai Hospital has served the Chinese market for more than twenty years and established a comprehensive network of hospitals, medical centres, and clinics that introduce global medical expertise and service quality. Shanghai General Hospital, with a history of more than 160 years, is one of China’s earliest Class A Tertiary hospitals. It manages more than 4.3 million outpatient visits each year and is recognised for its strength in clinical care, scientific research, and innovation.

Dr Kenneth Tsang, Regional CEO of IHH Healthcare North Asia, said, “This partnership marks an important step for IHH Healthcare in advancing international medical services across North Asia. By combining the Group’s global resources with the expertise of Shanghai General Hospital, we will deepen collaboration in specialty development, talent training, and technical exchange to build a healthcare system in Shanghai that meets global standards and serves diverse patient needs.”

Professor Zheng Xingdong, President of Shanghai General Hospital, added, “This cooperation is a meaningful exploration of how a public hospital and an international healthcare brand can complement each other. Together, we will build a personalised healthcare system for the full life cycle, providing higher quality and more accessible care for patients in Shanghai and beyond.”

Looking forward, both hospitals will strengthen collaboration in key clinical areas including Urology, Oncology, Thyroid and Breast Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Cardiology, Spine, and Orthopaedics. They will work together on joint specialty development, clinical cooperation, and technical exchange to bring clinical practices in line with global benchmarks. The partnership also plans to build shared research platforms, support joint talent development, and cultivate medical teams with international perspectives to achieve full integration across technology, clinical capability, and service delivery.

This partnership seeks to combine IHH Healthcare’s global operational expertise with the strong clinical foundation of Shanghai General Hospital. It aims to pioneer new, high-quality collaboration models between foreign-invested and public hospitals, expand cooperation in specialties, talent development, and medical resources, and ultimately deliver more diverse and superior healthcare services for patients in Shanghai and across China.
