The clock was ticking for the teams at Global Hospital, Parel and Fortis Hospital, Kalyan as they raced against time to successfully transport a set of deceased donor’s organs swiftly and safely to the former for a lifesaving transplant surgery.
Upon notification of a possible deceased donor at Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, the retrieval team from Global Hospital, Parel that included Dr. Prashantha S. Rao, HPB & Liver Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Neha Bhatt, Transplant Fellow, R/N Anand, Scrub Nurse and Prathamesh, OT technician immediately set out for Fortis Hospital, Kalyan in the wee hours of the morning.
Dr Sandeep Patil, Chief Intensivist at Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, initiated the donor maintenance protocol to move the organs after the deceased’s next-of-kin consented to donate the deceased’s organs.
In an exemplary show of teamwork, both the organ transplant teams from our two sister hospitals in Mumbai completed the challenging task in under an hour, with the help of the Central Railway Mumbai Division who created a ‘green’ corridor to facilitate the liver transfer. By road, this journey would have taken twice the amount of time.
Great job to everyone who made this happen and for giving hope and a new lease of life to the recipients of the organ transplant.
