A Medical First For Fortis

Fortis Hospital & Kidney Institute, Kolkata successfully performed India’s first laparoscopic Urinary Bladder & Ureter Reconstruction surgery

Kudos to our team at Fortis Hospital & Kidney Institute, Kolkata for successfully performing India’s first laparoscopic Urinary Bladder & Ureter Reconstruction surgery.

While urinary track reconstruction is not uncommon, this is the first instance to have both the urinary bladder as well as the ureters reconstructed simultaneously.

This challenging surgery was led by Dr R K Gopala Krishna, Director of Urology at Fortis Hospital & Kidney Institute and his team of surgeons. The patient was suffering from severe pain in his lower abdomen and frequent urination due to shrinkage of his urinary bladder as well as his left ureter due to tuberculosis in his urinary track.

Dr Gopala Krishna performed a laparoscopic reconstruction instead of an open surgery so that the patient would not have to undergo a long abdominal incision, reducing the chances of him developing hernia. As a result, the patient was able to recover faster with less post-operation care required.
