Improving Risk-Based Kidney Care Through Automated KFRE Reporting

Improving Risk-Based Kidney Care Through Automated KFRE Reporting

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing health concern in Malaysia, where early identification of patients at risk of kidney failure is essential for timely intervention and improved outcomes. Researchers at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur evaluated the use of automated Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE) reporting to support risk stratification and clinical decision-making for patients with CKD stages 3 and 4. KFRE is an internationally validated kidney failure risk prediction tool that estimates a patient's likelihood of progressing to kidney failure within two and five years. The study assessed whether integrating automated KFRE reporting into routine clinical workflows could influence physician practice, including medication optimisation and referrals to nephrology specialists. The findings suggest that automated KFRE reporting can help clinicians identify higher-risk patients earlier and support more personalised kidney disease management. More than 60% of patients reviewed underwent treatment optimisation following implementation of the reporting system, highlighting the potential of data-driven approaches to improve CKD care and patient outcomes. The study was accepted for presentation at the World Congress of Nephrology 2026
