National initiative broadens access to structured lung assessment, integrated care pathways and prompt follow-through for 10,000 traffic police officers
Cyberjaya, 10 May 2026 – IHH Healthcare Malaysia has formalised a strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Royal Malaysia Police under the LungShield Programme, with support from the National Cancer Society Malaysia, marking a coordinated national effort to advance early detection of lung disease and widen access to timely intervention for high-risk individuals.
Under this initiative, 10,000 traffic police officers across the country will be able to undergo structured lung screening through IHH Healthcare Malaysia’s network of 18 hospitals nationwide, recognising the prolonged occupational exposure many officers face to vehicle emissions, airborne particles and environmental pollutants.
Beyond initial assessment, the programme establishes a coordinated clinical pathway, from chest X-ray and low-dose CT screening to biopsy, reflex molecular testing, staging scans, specialist review and onward treatment where clinically indicated, enabling individuals identified to be at risk to receive timely and appropriate follow-through care.
The need for early intervention has become increasingly urgent. According to the Malaysian Cancer Registry Report, cases involving lung, trachea and bronchus cancer in Malaysia have nearly doubled over the last decade, while 95% of diagnosed cases are detected only at Stage III or Stage IV, when treatment becomes more complex and options become narrower. This reinforces the importance of shifting healthcare upstream, towards awareness, screening and early clinical action.
Dr Kamal Amzan, Chief Executive Officer of IHH Healthcare Malaysia, said, “The future of healthcare will not be defined solely by how well we treat a disease, but by how soon we detect it and what we do in time to change its course. That is the direction we are moving towards – taking care beyond hospital walls and closer to the communities we serve.”
“At IHH Healthcare Malaysia, we are able to contribute meaningfully through our nationwide reach and integrated capabilities, supported by a strong clinical network that helps connect detection with coordinated treatment. Through LungShield, we are bringing these strengths together to build a clearer pathway from risk identification to intervention, because when disease is addressed sooner, outcomes improve meaningfully.”
This collaboration reflects a broader shift in healthcare, one that places greater emphasis on prevention, early intervention and multi-sector collaboration to address disease before it progresses, ultimately contributing to healthier communities and better long-term outcomes
