For over four weeks since India entered a national lockdown on 25 March 2020, Mohit Wankhade from Fortis Hospital, Mulund had not gone home nor seen his wife and 8-year-old son.

As the Head of Administration, Mohit plays a pivotal role in ensuring that all medical, paramedical and support staff at the hospital are well protected, well taken care of and fully equipped to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, he also oversees the smooth operation of the hospital, making sure our admission, discharge, patient transfer and ambulance arrangement processes keep up with the evolving COVID-19 situation.

Faced with a pervasive and life-threatening enemy, Mohit knew he had to keep his eye on the ball and be on his toes at all times – even if it meant sacrificing his personal and family time for the good of his colleagues and patients. Knowing that his family was supportive of his work and safe at home was the booster he needed to focus on his duties.

Since the start of the outbreak, he has supported the team by providing them with all the necessary ‘ammunition’, be it medical supplies, medicines, PPEs or even food. He also worked day and night to set up the COVID-19 isolation unit in a record time of three days, and thereafter provided care to the isolated patients as though they were a family member.

In the midst of the raging crisis, Mohit has demonstrated exemplary leadership, empathy and dedication. A true hero who never hesitates to put others above self.
